Shadows and Lights
A selection of photographs from the Chaplin archives with Edna Purviance, the leading lady in many of Chaplin's early films. In a span of eight years, she appeared in over thirty films with him. Chaplin kept her on his payroll until her death in 1958.
A woman of modern times: Chaplin’s third marriage lasted from 1936 to 1942 and was to Paulette Goddard, the actress who appeared in Modern Times and The Great Dictator. Though Charlie and Paulette divorced, it was by all accounts, on amicable terms.
